Save Your Electric Bill and Save the Planet!

The Volkswagen brand and Volkswagen South Charlotte both know the importance of environmental conscientiousness. Changing your lifestyle to help save the environment doesn’t have to be a chore, especially when you consider the potential savings. A little bit of eco-consciousness goes a long way, and even small changes at home will have a cumulative effect on the environment–and your electric bill.

Unplug Parasitic Electronics

Did you know that certain electronics act as parasites and add to your electric bill? That’s a nasty way to describe electronics that suck energy even when they aren’t in use, wasting your hard-earned money in the process.

Your computer is a perfect example. It’s bad enough if you leave it on all day even if you aren’t using it. If you are eco-conscious enough to turn it off, does “off” really mean that it is no longer using energy? The answer is an expensive “no!” With parasitic electronics, the answer is always to unplug.

Look around your home for other parasites that are raising your electric bill, such as television sets and digital electronics. By using power strips or protectors you can minimize the damage to your electric bill. At the end of each day power down all of your electronics and turn off the surge protectors. Check your home for anything that uses a power pack and unplug it when it isn’t in use. Put your cell phone charger at the top of your “unplug it list” because it is one of the hungriest of all power-sucking parasites.

Change Light Bulbs

It’s no longer just about turning off lights in empty rooms. By now just about everyone knows that change is in the air as energy-efficient compact fluorescent lights (CFL’s) and light emitting diodes (LED’s) continue to replace traditional incandescent bulbs. The Department of Energy notes that CFL’s and LED’s “are 75 or 80 percent more efficient than traditional lighting, and they’ll last 10 or 25 times longer. In some cases, you might never have to replace them.”

These bulbs will cost more upfront, but will more than pay for themselves in long-term savings. It’s tough to argue against saving money while protecting the environment simply by making this easy change.

Consider Appliance Operating Costs

When it comes time to replace your old appliances, one of the best ways to save on your electric bill and help save the planet is by choosing new replacements that bear the “Energy Star” label. This label is the government certification issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. It is estimated that 20 percent of your electric bill comes from the use of your refrigerator, washer and dryer, and dishwasher, and selecting “Energy Star” models ensures that they will run as efficiently as possible.

The next time you go shopping for a new appliance, understand that each item bears two costs: the purchase price and the operating cost. Don’t let the purchase price be the sole factor in your decision making process. What may be a bargain today could cost you double your money in ineffeciency over the long term.

Isn’t it worth making a few eco-conscious changes that will save on your electric bill and save the planet, too? Think about it and begin to make these easy changes around your home today.

Driving With Your Pet

Whether you are driving a short distance or taking a longer ride with your pet, there are some tips to keep in mind. Safety is a key factor when taking your pet anywhere in the car. You need to be safe and calm while driving and your pet does, too. If you have an out of control pet riding in a vehicle with you, there is a risk to you, other drivers, and your pet. Keep these tips in mind, and you and your pet will have a happy traveling experience.

Keep Your Pet Secure

The last thing you want when riding with your pet is for it to be jumping all over the vehicle. Make sure your pet is secured with a safety harness that attaches to the seat belt. Alternatively, you can invest in a crate that will keep your pet safe while you drive. You will have to make sure that the crate is very secure, because if your pet is too small for the crate, it can still be slammed against it during an accident. If your pet is loose in the car, it can cause all sorts of problems. Not only is there a chance the pet could jump on you while you drive, but if you do happen to be in an accident, your sweet pooch or kitty could be seriously injured.

If you have a pick-up truck, never allow your pet to travel in the bed of the truck. Your pet could leap out unexpectedly or could have an injury if you have to brake suddenly. Always make sure your pet is secure before you embark on your journey.

Travel Accessories

It is best to take your pet on a short trip first to find out how they are going to react while in the car. If you decide to take your pet on a long road trip, you will need to take certain items along with you. Don’t forget any pet medication; blankets; food, water and two bowls; a collar with your pet’s information; two leashes (in case one gets broken or lost); and a dog/cat bed for when you get to your destination. It’s important to have disposable bags and rags for cleaning up any messes. And be sure to bring extra bottles of water so you can give it to your pet whenever it needs a drink.

Keep Your Vehicle Ventilated

Your pet will need ventilation on the trip, as this will cut down on car sickness. It is also important to keep your pet cool while in the car so make sure there is plenty of available cool air. Never, ever leave your pet in a hot car for any length of time! It is very dangerous to leave any pet in a hot vehicle with no ventilation.

A lot of pets get very excited about a car ride, while there are others that don’t like the car. You can try and get your pet used to the vehicle by having it in the car while not going anywhere. Give lots of praise and treats while the car is stationery with your pet inside. The most important thing to remember is that driving in a car with your pet should be a pleasant experience, and fun for both the driver and the pet.

Happy traveling from Volkswagen South Charlotte!

10 Cool Things About The 2012 Volkswagen Jetta

2012 Volkswagen JettaWith sleek European styling, a distinguished legacy, and impressive features, the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta is a must-see for any car buyer. At Volkswagen of South Charlotte, our customers tell us that they love the Jetta’s fuel efficiency, style, and reliability, as well as the many optional features that allow them to create their own custom experience. There’s a reason this cool little car is so popular, but here are 10 of the coolest things about the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta.

  1. The Jetta comes in several trim levels for easy entry. Base MSRP starts at $16,495 for the base-level Jetta S and increases to $26,445 for the top-of-the-line Jetta GLI Autobahn. With such a broad range, the Jetta can fit almost any budget.
  2. All Jetta models come with the Immobilizer III theft-deterrent system. This system works with the Jetta smart key to make sure that only the person with the key can access the car. This means that thieves cannot easily copy your key or move your car without it.
  3. Sending the signal. The Jetta has signals available on exterior mirrors. This important safety feature improves visibility and communication while on the road.
  4. The Jetta has 15.5 cubic feet of cargo without folding the back seat. The 60/40 split backseat lets drivers convert most of the 43.8 cubic feet in rear volume into auxiliary cargo space. Tall, full-size adults fit nicely in the back with 38.1 inches of legroom.
  5. Standard Jetta traction control features include Electronic Stability Control, Anti-Slip Regulation, Electronic Brake-Pressure Distribution, Electronic Differential Lock, Engine Brake Assist, and Hydraulic Brake Assist. Other features such as Hill Hold Control come standard with GLI and TDI Jetta models.
  6. Volkswagen uses laser seam welding in production of the Jetta. This produces continuous seals that improve the solid feel, stability, and safety of the car.
  7. A robust instrument cluster includes a tachometer, speedometer, trip meter, odometer, fuel gauge, external temperature, and clock display. The high-tech looking instrument panel comes standard in all Jetta models.
  8. Jetta GLI comes with a Fender Premium Audio System that uses 9 speakers to deliver performance hall-quality sound. The gut-busting, face-melting sound delivered by this system makes the GLI even more attractive.
  9. The optional 2.0-liter, 16-valve TDI diesel engine for Jetta delivers an EPA-estimated 42 mpg on the highway. Cool mileage like that easily justifies the added cost for the diesel model. The 2.0- and 2.5-liter gasoline engines go 33 miles on a gallon during highway driving.
  10. VW dealers offer a free multi-point inspection. Certified technicians will check over your Jetta from front to back to make sure your car is ready to withstand the demands of the coming driving season. This gives drivers a great way to solve problems before they become serious and expensive.

10 Signs It’s Time for a New Car

A new car is probably the second-most expensive purchase that you will make in your life, so it’s hardly surprising that people put off spending the money for as long as they can. But it isn’t just the cost of a new car that puts people off. The sheer range of different vehicles available today can leave buyers in a quandary about what to do next, and there’s also an emotional connection that can be hard to break.

There comes a time, however, when a buyer must bite the bullet and accept that it really is time to invest in a new car. Follow these 10 signs from us Volkswagen of South Charlotte that tell you it’s time for a new car:

1. You consider duct tape a car part. So many knobs, buttons, and panels are held together with the stuff that you are single-handedly keeping the manufacturer in business. Things are really bad when you have to scream hysterically at anyone who starts to pick at the piece of tape holding the passenger door together.

2. Your Madonna tape is stuck in the cassette player. Remember that cassette players probably fell out of production well over ten years ago. Compact discs have come and largely gone in the time since you last bought a vehicle, and what’s more, Madonna has been married, divorced and now has a grown-up daughter. It’s time to move on!

3. You cannot remember the make, model, or original color of your car. It went out of production so long ago that even your dealership has to call its corporate office to find out the model number and, once ordered, parts take several months to come from the factory.

4. Your children no longer have enough leg room in the back of the car. It’s time to find a vehicle that has more space, and that isn’t inadvertently stunting your kids’ growth.

5. Your car keeps getting towed away for scrap. What’s more, it’s likely that you get constant dirty looks from everyone else on the road, thanks to the belching smoke that comes out of your exhaust.

6. You have worn out all the pages in your road map. Navigating with a map is hard enough as it is, but when the print has literally worn off, you might need to consider investing in something a little more up-to-date. GPS and satellite navigation systems don’t wear out and they don’t become out-of-date thanks to a new highway.

7. It was flooded. As much as you might love your car, you will never be able to get rid of that damp smell, and you can’t be entirely sure that the whole chassis isn’t rusting and rotting from the inside out. That tide mark on the rear passengers seat looks rather unsightly, too.

8. When your car spends more time in the repair shop than on your driveway, it’s time to consider the alternatives. Unreliable cars aren’t just irritating. They can be dangerous, too, and as the car gets older, the cost is just going to escalate further and further. It’s time to go car shopping.

9. The check-engine light bulb needs replacing monthly. Remember that this is supposed to be an occasional warning light, not a means for illuminating the map that you are holding in one hand. Clearly, your car maintenance schedule can’t cope.

10. When you get the fuel bill at the gas station, you generally need to be resuscitated. Older vehicles consume fuel at a much less efficient rate, and unless you’re a multi-millionaire, you almost certainly want to spend that money on something else.

If any of these 10 signs sound like what you’re going through with your car, then it may be time to buy a new one. Come by our dealership today to find a car that’s right for you!

The Best Drives to See Fall Foliage in the Southeast

You don’t have to travel to New England to see awesome fall foliage panoramas. In the southeast, there are numerous opportunities for a colorful and inspiring fall driving experience.

Here are some of Volkswagen of South Charlotte’s favorite drives to see fall foliage in the southeast:

Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

A 105-mile drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Skyline Drive is annually rated a top-ten foliage drive by a host of national travel publications. Starting in Front Royal, Virginia and ending in the Waynesboro-Charlottesville area, the brightly colored foliage consists of yellow and orange hickories, deep purple dogwoods, and vibrantly red Virginia creeper vines. With over 75 overlooks, you’re sure to find a gorgeous spot along the way for picnicking or picture-taking.

Asheville, North Carolina

The Blue Ridge Parkway, with its awe-inspiring panoramas, is one of America’s best foliage drives. Begin your scenic trip at milepost 469 from Cherokee and wind your way through Mount Pisgah and Asheville, finally finishing at Mount Mitchell State Park. The collage of poplar, maple, red spruce, ash, and beech trees is phenomenal. Along the way, there are country-style restaurants and shops selling everything from pottery and quilts to rocking chairs and beef jerky.

Northern Georgia

Every year around the last full week of October, north Georgia erupts in a gorgeous patchwork of brilliant gold and vibrant red leaves. One of the best drives is the 14-mile long Chattahoochee River Road, which takes you from Unicol Gap to the Helen, a German-style village. Other popular routes include Tallulah River Road, Cohutta Loop, Pocket Road, Everett Springs Road, Floyd Springs Road, and Forest Service Road 42.

Lake Hartwell, South Carolina

Starting at the South Carolina Welcome Center at I-85 exit 1 near Westminster, this 125-mile loop traverses three states (South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia) and three national forests. Enhancing the experience are 12 fantastic waterfalls, dozens of unique crafts shops, and exceptional country-style restaurants.

Tallahassee, Florida

Set in the panhandle in north Florida, Tallahassee is dominated by canopy roads framed by giant, moss-draped live oak trees, hickory trees, and towering pines. There are nine official canopy roads in Tallahassee encompassing 78 miles. Some of the most popular are Old Bainbridge Road, Pisgah Church Road, Old Centerville Road, Sunny Hill Road, and Old St. Augustine Road.

Cades Cove Loop Road in Tennessee

A beautiful wide valley encircled by the Great Smoky Mountains, Cades Cove is a wonderland of stunningly colorful leaves, wildlife such as white-tailed deer, coyote, and raccoon, nature trails, and historic 18th and 19th-century buildings such as log cabins, churches, and a gristmill. Trees in Cades cove include American beech and birch, mountain maple, pin cherry, and mountain ash. Located 27 miles from Gatlinburg, the foliage drive is an 11-mile, one-way loop that circles the cove. Halfway around the loop is the Cable Mille historic area.

Introducing The 2012 VW Eos

2012 VW Eos from Charlotte VW DealershipWe at Volkswagen of South Charlotte, your Charlotte VW dealership, are excited to offer you this review of the 2012 Volkswagen Eos. Restyled for 2012 with a more masculine look, the Volkswagen Eos still boasts all of the driver-friendly features that have defined the brand for over a decade. It has plenty of get-up-and-go, fantastic steering, and a comfortable cabin. Of course, the defining feature of the Eos is that it is a convertible designed to be sporty and fun, but still practical for day-to-day driving.

Sun Worshippers Rejoice

Convertibles hold obvious appeal–who wouldn’t relish the experience of driving with the sun on their shoulders and the wind in their hair? The Volkswagen Eos, named for the Greek goddess of the dawn, is the greatest convertible experience on the market. As the only hardtop convertible with a standard built-in sunroof, the Eos allows you to catch a few rays even on cold days. It is the perfect car for drives to the beach or lake, or for touring the countryside. You’ll have plenty of room for lunch baskets, beach towels, and other gear in the roomy trunk, which features more space than the Mustang convertible. This convertible does not fear the rain, either. Hot wax flooding of the body makes the car so watertight that Volkswagen offers a 12-year warranty against corrosion.

The Eos has heated leather front seats that are also sun-resistant, making it a pleasure to sit in. The car also comes with a multifunction steering wheel that allows you to control features like the Bluetooth wireless integration system. Touchscreen controls not only come with the standard audio system, but also the optional navigation system and high definition 600-watt Dynaudio sound system with Sirius satellite radio.

Top-of-the-Line Safety Features

Of course, convertible owners are understandably concerned about safety, especially when it comes to the possibility of a rollover. With Eos’s innovative automatic rollover protection system, which deploys concealed steel beams from the back headrests to keep you safe, you can rest easy. Other safety features adding to Volkswagen’s impressive safety record include the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) for greater stability in sudden maneuvers. The Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS) responds to a collision by automatically cutting power to the fuel pump, turning on the hazard lights, and unlocking the doors. In addition, the front end is optimized for a crash, meaning it compresses on impact so the car absorbs the majority of the force rather than the tender people inside. Finally, side-mounted airbags provide head protection for both driver and front passenger.

The Volkswagen Driving Experience

Any Volkswagen vehicle is a pleasure to drive, and the sporty Eos is no exception. With a fuel-injected 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft. of torque, you can be confident in the power and responsiveness of the car’s drive. The engine is carefully controlled with a six-speed DSG automatic transmission with Tiptronic, giving the driver more control than a traditional automatic. As always, this VW comes with four-corner independent suspension, which leads to tight, precise turns. Besides the improved fuel efficiency that comes with the computer-controlled fuel injection, the Eos has an electromechanical steering system that further improves gas mileage and handling.

The Best Convertible for the Money

The Eos starts at just under $34,000 for the base Komfort model, which is comparable in price to other convertibles in the same category. However, because most competitors at this price point don’t offer the Eos’s wide array of options, the VW model remains a cut above. Of course, buying from Volkswagen is an introduction to a different level of customer service, as Volkswagen takes pains to make sure no customer has any complaints. There is a reason why Volkswagen cars retain their value better than nearly any other brand on the road, and it is a testament to this company’s craftsmanship and dedication to excellence.

Check out your Charlotte VW dealerhip’s Inventory of the 2012 Eos. Come test drive the 2012 Volkswagen Eos at Volkswagen of South Charlotte today!

The Fun Theory’s Play Belt

Volkswagen’s Fun Theory is a program dedicated to encouraging people to make positive changes—simply by making it fun. In other words, when it comes to human behavior, it’s all about the carrot, not the stick. Whether you’re looking to make a change for yourself, for the environment, or for something entirely different, the only thing that matters is that it’s a change for the better…and of course, that you have fun doing it.

This month, we are featuring the Play Belt, which was developed by Nevena Stojanovic in Serbia with the goal of making buckling up—you guessed it—fun. The key to the Play Belt’s success is that it is linked to the vehicle’s entertainment system, meaning that only by buckling up can backseat passengers enjoy videos and more. This simple but effective idea made it to the finals of the Fun Theory Award. The Play Belt is currently being tested in Sweden, with the hopes that it could be applied to all vehicles in the future. Check out this video to learn more.

We at Volkswagen of South Charlotte believe in the Fun Theory—do you?

The Speed Camera Lottery

A few years back, Volkswagen hosted a competition called The Fun Theory. The idea was to encourage good behavior by making that behavior fun. The competition’s winning idea came from an American inventor.

The idea is to get to people to obey the speed limit by capturing on camera those safe drivers—people who are driving at or below the speed limit. Their photograph would be taken and their registration numbers recorded and entered into a lottery. A drawing would be taken and the winner would receive a cash prize. The video below outlines the basic process:

Civil engineers in Sweden liked this idea so much that the Swedish National Society for Road Safety actually made this innovative idea a reality in Stockholm, Sweden. All of us here at Volkswagen of South Charlotte couldn’t agree with those engineers more. We are proud to be part of Volkswagen brand because of its commitment to safely and innovation.

The 2012 Volkswagen CC

Volkswagen has a history that began with the humble and modest Beetle in the 1940s and has expanded consistently over the seven decades since. The Volkswagen lineup has grown to include SUVs, vans, and sporty hatchbacks. Volkswagen produces vehicles that truly embrace the German translation of the brand’s name–”People’s Car.” With the 2012 CC, Volkswagen has created a sedan with performance and style to catch the hearts of many, once again living up to the standard of the “People’s Car.”

The first thing you notice about the Volkswagen CC is the sleek styling that flows along the exterior. One of the pioneers of the “4-door coupe” movement among sedans, the CC has the looks of a coupe, yet the practicality of a normal sedan. CC stands for Comfort Coupe, and it is easy to see how the 2012 CC fits the bill perfectly.

That gorgeous styling won’t change with the level of trim either, thankfully. Even on the base Sport trim, you still get standard 17-inch wheels, LED taillights, and rain-sensing wipers. If you feel the urge for something just as beautiful but with a touch of sportiness, check the box for the R-Line trim, and you’ll net 18-inch wheels and special exterior touches. The Lux trim adds different 18-inch wheels and the option of xenon headlights.

Interior features are plentiful, as well. Standard on all models are 12-way heated front seats, leatherette seating surfaces, Bluetooth, iPod integration, and a touch-screen audio system with eight speakers and satellite radio. Optional is a 10-speaker Dynaudio premium sound system with 600 watts of power, and you can also add an available navigation system with rear camera. Combine the style found both inside and out with the comfort and technology of the interior, and it’s a winning combination for Volkswagen.

Style and technology aren’t everything though, and the mechanical side of the 2012 Volkswagen CC won’t disappoint either. Standard equipment includes a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission. Prefer to let the car do the shifting? There’s also a six-speed DSG automatic transmission available, and it comes standard on Lux trims.

Sure, the Sport, R-Line, and Lux trims have a powerful 4-cylinder in the engine bay. And that engine returns EPA-fuel economy ratings of 21 city/31 highway, while getting to 60 mph from a stop in only 6.9 seconds. But what if you want more performance? The top of the line CC VR6 4MOTION Executive model features an exclusive 3.6-liter V6 engine pumping out 280 horsepower. But the real secret here is that the Executive also features all-wheel drive to provide grip in any condition. That extra grip and power helps the VR6 model get to 60 mph in an even-quicker 6.2 seconds for an even more sporty driving experience.

So the 2012 Volkswagen CC has the style, comfort, and performance to live up to German automotive standards. But does it have the safety and value to match? Absolutely, as the CC has earned the prestigious honor of an IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2011. Even better, CC has all this to offer at a starting price of only $28,515 for the Sport model, with the top-tier VR6 4MOTION Executive starting at $40,390. Come visit Volkswagen of South Charlotte today for a test drive!
